A Guide to Allocating Your Wedding Budget for the Perfect Destination Celebration!

You started googling Dominican Republic all-inclusive resorts, and now you’re three hours deep into a rabbit hole with 47 tabs open and zero decisions made.
Every resort claims to be the best. Every review says something different. And somewhere in between the “Top 10 Lists” that all seem to feature the same properties, you’re just trying to figure out where you actually want to go.
If you’re asking, “What is the best Dominican Republic all inclusive resort?” here’s what I’ll tell you upfront: there is no single best resort in the Dominican Republic. There’s only the best resort for you.
I’m Morgan with Making Memories by Morgan, a Certified Executive Wedding Planner and Certified Destination Wedding Expert, and last week I had the opportunity to tour 12 resorts throughout the Dominican Republic firsthand on a brand-hosted familiarity trip. Not through brochures. Not through stock photos. I walked the properties, inspected the rooms, stood on the beaches, and paid close attention to the details that actually matter when you’re deciding where to spend your honeymoon, vacation, or destination wedding.
And yes, I do this regularly. Resorts change constantly, and the property that was outstanding two years ago may look very different today. Staying current is part of how I do my job well.
This guide breaks down my top Dominican Republic resort picks (of the 12 I saw last week) by category so you can stop scrolling and start planning with someone who’s actually been there.

| Category | Resort |
| Best Beach in Dominican Republic | Secrets Playa Esmeralda & Dreams Playa Esmeralda |
| Best Adults Only Luxury Resort | Secrets Cap Cana |
| Best Quiet Escape | Zoetry Agua Punta Cana |
| Best Ocean View Pools | Secrets Tides Punta Cana |
| Best Location for Excursions | Secrets La Romana & Dreams Dominicus La Romana |
| Best Resort for Mixed Age Groups | Dreams Onyx |
| Best Family Waterpark Resort | Hyatt Ziva Cap Cana & Hyatt Zilara Cap Cana |
| Best Active Family Resort | Dreams Macao |
| Best Adult Villa Experience | Dreams Cap Cana |
***These recommendations are based on 12 Dominican Republic resorts I personally toured last week on a site inspection trip. While I’ve visited many other resorts over the years, this comparison focuses only on the properties I saw during this visit.
Every Dominican Republic all-inclusive resort on this list was evaluated based on firsthand experience during a brand-hosted familiarity trip. I toured 12 properties throughout the Dominican Republic, and these are my honest takes.
During my site visits, I evaluated:
Online reviews can be helpful, but there is no substitute for actually standing on the beach, walking the grounds, touring rooms, and seeing how everything comes together in real life. That’s what makes this list different.

I’ll be honest with you: pictures don’t do this beach justice.
The first peek of the beach at Secrets Playa Esmeralda & Dreams Playa Esmeralda genuinely stopped me in my tracks. The sand is soft and golden, the water is that specific shade of turquoise that makes you wonder if it’s real, and the shoreline stretches far enough that you can take a long walk and feel like you have it almost to yourself. For a beach person, this is it.
What surprised me was how unspoiled the whole area feels. It doesn’t have that overdeveloped resort-row vibe. It feels like somewhere you actually discovered, even if you flew there on a direct flight with 200 other people.
The location is more secluded, so if you’re looking for nightlife or lots of off-resort activity, this probably isn’t your match. But if your ideal vacation involves a stunning stretch of beach, a good book, and a drink in your hand? You can stop looking.
Best for: Beach lovers, honeymooners, couples who want to fully decompress, destination wedding couples who want to absolutely wow their guests with the most incredible beach backdrop.

If I had to point someone toward one luxury adults-only resort in the Dominican Republic, it would be here. Every time.
Secrets Cap Cana sits inside the gated community of Cap Cana, which already tells you something about the atmosphere. But what really sets it apart is the service. This resort is widely regarded as one of the top properties in the entire country, not just within its brand, and the service level is a big reason why. Staff are attentive without being overbearing, responsive without being performative. You feel genuinely taken care of from the moment you arrive.
The accommodations are thoughtfully designed, the beach is beautiful, and the pools are stunning. It manages to feel luxurious and relaxed at the same time. You’re not stiff at this resort. You’re just exceptionally well taken care of.
Best for: Honeymooners, anniversary trips, luxury travelers, adults-only vacations, anyone who wants a resort that will actually exceed their expectations.
Highlights:

Some people don’t want a packed activities calendar or a DJ by the pool. Some people just want to be left alone in a beautiful place.
Zoetry Agua Punta Cana is for those people, and I mean that as the highest compliment.
With only 92 rooms, it has a boutique feel that immediately sets it apart from the sprawling mega-resorts nearby. The atmosphere is calm and unhurried. The oceanfront pool area is one of the more peaceful settings I saw on the entire trip. The whole property feels intentional in a way that bigger resorts sometimes just aren’t.
If you’ve been running on empty and need a vacation that actually restores you, Zoetry delivers something a 2,000-room resort simply cannot.
And if you’re planning a girls trip? The Villa Caney Garden View is worth knowing about. It sleeps 8 (one king bed plus four queens), comes with a private patio, plunge pool, lounge chairs, and a garden view. It’s essentially a private retreat inside an already peaceful resort. Enough space for everyone, enough privacy to actually decompress, and zero itinerary required.
Best for: Couples, wellness-focused travelers, anyone who needs a genuine reset, travelers who love the feel of a boutique hotel without sacrificing all-inclusive convenience, girls trips looking for something a little more special than standard rooms.
Highlights:

Secrets Tides earns this category, but calling it just a “pool resort” would be underselling it. The pool situation here is genuinely impressive. The layout feels modern and thought-through, with long stretches of pool space that don’t feel cramped even when the resort is busy. Ocean views from the pools, live music playing during the day, swim-up bars, swim-up suites. It creates a whole vibe. The kind of place where you plant yourself at 10am and look up four hours later wondering where the day went.
The beach is lovely too, just not quite at the level of Playa Esmeralda. What really makes Tides stand out is how aesthetically cohesive the whole property feels: modern architecture, lush foliage, thoughtful design details everywhere you look. It’s a beautiful resort that also happens to have exceptional pools.
Best for: Pool lovers, design-forward travelers, social couples, anyone who wants a lively but still upscale atmosphere with great ocean views.
Highlights:

Most all-inclusive guests stay on the resort. The guests who book Secrets La Romana & Dreams Dominicus La Romana usually have other plans.
The location is the whole point. Saona Island, Catalina Island, snorkeling, scuba, boat charters — it’s all incredibly accessible from here. You can spot boats sitting out in the water nearby, and the marina is just a short distance away. It has a completely different energy than the typical Punta Cana resort stretch, and for the right traveler, that’s exactly the appeal.
The beach itself is a nice bonus too: soft, kinetic sand with minimal seaweed, and a water sports attendant who will take you out on a Hobie Cat if you ask nicely. There are also small local vendors nearby selling jewelry, pool toys, and trinkets, which adds a little local color to the whole experience.
If you want a beautiful home base AND a full excursion list, this is where I’d send you.
Best for: Adventure seekers, divers, active travelers, anyone who wants to explore the Dominican Republic on the coastline.
Highlights:

Multi-generational travel is one of the harder vacation puzzles to solve. Grandparents want peace and quiet. Parents want a moment to breathe. Teenagers want something to do. Kids want everything, all at once.
Dreams Onyx handles this better than almost any other resort I toured, and the reason is simple: it genuinely thought about everyone.
The Jungle Park waterpark is the centerpiece for families. Slides, a lazy river, a performance stage with live entertainment, splash zones, and family pools. Mom can float the lazy river in peace while the kids do waterslides ten feet away. Dad can grab a chair nearby without being voluntold to ride anything. It’s that rare setup where relaxing and keeping kids entertained aren’t mutually exclusive.
The adults-only Preferred Club pool area gives parents and grandparents a quieter space when they need it. The connection to Breathless Punta Cana next door gives adults an even more grown-up option when the mood calls for it. And the Cosmic Lanes Sports & Games complex (bowling, go-karts, bumper cars, arcade — note this is an additional cost) keeps teenagers occupied without anyone having to beg them to enjoy themselves.
Best for: Multi-generational families, large groups, parents who want to relax without losing track of their kids.
Highlights:

When clients ask me which resort has the best waterpark in the Dominican Republic, Hyatt Ziva Cap Cana is almost always my answer.
Five high-speed water slides, a lazy river, splash zones for toddlers, water cannons, and food truck dining so you never have to leave the fun zone mid-day. It’s legitimately impressive, and it holds up even against resorts that charge separately for waterpark access.
What puts Hyatt Ziva a step above a lot of family resorts is that it doesn’t sacrifice the overall resort experience to deliver the waterpark. Because it shares amenities with Hyatt Zilara Cap Cana next door, families still get a higher-end feel alongside all the activity. You’re not trading quality for fun. You actually get both.
Best for: Families, active travelers, multi-generational groups, anyone who wants a luxury family experience without cutting corners.
Highlights:

If your family’s idea of a great vacation is one where something is always happening, Dreams Macao is going to feel like home.
This resort runs. Live entertainment, nightly shows, waterpark, splash zones for little ones, activities for older kids and teens. It has an energy from morning to night that some resorts try to create and never quite pull off. The beach is also a highlight here: minimal seaweed and a clean shoreline, plus some genuinely stunning wedding venues on the property if that’s on your radar.
I’ll be honest: if you want quiet, this isn’t your resort. But if you have kids who get bored easily and a family that thrives on activity, the busy atmosphere isn’t a downside. It’s the whole point.
Best for: Families with active children, travelers who love entertainment, anyone who wants a resort with real energy.
Highlights:

If you’ve ever stayed at a Margaritaville and thought “I love this vibe, but make it more tropical and less flip-flops,” Dreams Cap Cana‘s villa section is basically that. (It was actually a Margaritaville at one point, which explains a lot.) The aesthetic is Key West meets tropical beachy, and it’s a specific vibe that genuinely works for the right crowd.
The adult villa section offers something you can’t replicate in a standard resort room: spacious accommodations, outdoor showers, exclusive pool access, and a sense of privacy that makes everything feel a little more intentional. What I kept thinking while I was there was this is perfect for a group. A milestone birthday, a bachelorette trip, close friends celebrating something worth celebrating. It has that “we reserved something special” feeling without having to rent out an entire private villa.
Best for: Adult friend groups, special celebrations, milestone trips, couples traveling with other couples who want a little extra.
Highlights:

Still narrowing it down? Here’s the short version:
Secrets Cap Cana if you want luxury, exceptional service, and an adults-only atmosphere. Honeymoon, anniversary, or just a trip where you want to feel genuinely taken care of.
Secrets & Dreams Playa Esmeralda if the beach is everything to you and natural beauty is your top priority. Also a standout choice for destination wedding couples.
Zoetry Agua Punta Cana if you want peace, quiet, and a boutique feel. Small, intentional, and restorative. Also a hidden gem for a girls trip, especially if you book the Villa Caney.
Secrets Tides if you want a resort that’s as beautiful to look at as it is to relax in, with incredible pools, ocean views, and a social daytime atmosphere.
Hyatt Ziva Cap Cana if you’re traveling with kids and want the best waterpark without giving up a high-end resort experience.
Dreams Macao if your family stays happiest when there’s always something going on.
Dreams Onyx if you’re traveling with multiple generations and need something that genuinely works for every age group, including a way to keep parents sane.
Secrets La Romana & Dreams Dominicus La Romana if you’re planning excursions and want easy access to the island’s best adventures.
Dreams Cap Cana Villas if you’re celebrating something and want accommodations that actually feel like an occasion.
Secrets Cap Cana or Hyatt Zilara Cap Cana. They’re widely regarded as one of the top resorts in the entire country, and the service alone justifies that reputation. For luxury adults-only travel, nothing I toured (or have toured in the past) comes close, in my opinion.
Punta Cana and Cap Cana are home to most of the country’s top resorts. Cap Cana generally offers a more upscale and exclusive atmosphere, while Punta Cana has a wider variety of options across different budgets and travel styles.
Worth noting: Miches is the new up-and-coming area to watch. Secrets & Dreams Playa Esmeralda is located there, along with a handful of other newer properties. The tradeoff is that it’s currently further from the main airport, though once you get about halfway into your drive the scenery is gorgeous. A Miches airport is reportedly in the works. No confirmed opening date yet, but it’s a region that’s only going to grow.
It depends on what you’re looking for. Cap Cana is ideal for luxury travelers who want a quieter, more exclusive environment. Punta Cana offers more nightlife, entertainment, and resort variety. Neither is objectively better, they just attract different types of travelers.
Secrets & Dreams Playa Esmeralda. It genuinely stopped me in my tracks when I stayed here in March and again during my site visit. I’ve seen a lot of beaches, and none can truly compare to the natural beauty of Miches.
Hyatt Ziva Cap Cana and Dreams Onyx are both excellent choices. Hyatt Ziva is the better fit if you want a luxury experience alongside an impressive waterpark. Dreams Onyx is the better budget friendly fit for multi-generational groups where you need something that works for every age, from grandparents down to toddlers.
Secrets Cap Cana. Romance, luxury, attentive service, and beautiful scenery. It consistently delivers and is strictly 100% adults only. Honorable mention to Secrets Tides and Secrets Playa Esmeralda.
Yes. Most travelers appreciate having accommodations, meals, drinks, entertainment, and activities bundled into one package. It makes budgeting easier and lets you actually relax once you arrive, rather than calculating every drink or meal.
For honeymoons and peak travel seasons, I recommend booking 9 to 12 months in advance whenever possible. The best room categories and dates fill up faster than most people expect.
If you’ve spent more than an hour comparing resorts online and still feel confused, that’s your answer right there.
Every resort markets itself as the best option. That’s their job. A travel advisor who has personally visited the properties can tell you what’s actually true, help you avoid costly mismatches, and make sure the resort you choose fits your specific goals, not just the highlights on their website.

The best Dominican Republic all-inclusive resort isn’t automatically the most expensive one or the one with the most five-star reviews. It’s the one that fits how you actually travel.
After touring 12 resorts throughout the Dominican Republic, one thing became clear: every property has real strengths. But not every resort is the right fit for every traveler. Choosing the wrong one doesn’t just mean a disappointing vacation. It can mean spending a lot of money to be somewhere that never quite felt right.
That’s exactly why I do what I do.
At Making Memories by Morgan, I help couples and travelers cut through the noise, compare options based on firsthand knowledge, and book with real confidence. Whether you’re planning a honeymoon, destination wedding, family vacation, or just a trip you’ve been putting off for too long, having someone in your corner who has actually been there makes the whole process easier.
