A Guide to Allocating Your Wedding Budget for the Perfect Destination Celebration!

Choosing a destination wedding resort without ever stepping foot on the property can feel like a huge leap of faith. That’s exactly what Marissa and Joe did when planning their El Dorado Casitas Royale wedding, trusting my firsthand experience and resort recommendations to help guide their decision.
Their celebration brought 75 family members and friends to Riviera Maya for a week filled with unforgettable memories, beautiful venues, and a few unexpected surprises along the way. From a beachfront ceremony at Fuentes Beach to a Sky Deck reception at Generations Riviera Maya, their wedding perfectly showcased why El Dorado Royale and El Dorado Casitas continue to be popular choices for destination weddings in Mexico.
While not everything went according to plan, including a rain shower that arrived just as dinner began and a major ice storm that disrupted guest travel, their wedding is proof that sometimes the most memorable celebrations are the ones that don’t go exactly as expected.

Meet Marissa & Joe, who are about to celebrate their second wedding anniversary in just a few months. Honestly, that feels hard to believe because it doesn’t seem that long ago that we were planning their destination wedding in Riviera Maya.
Marissa and I originally met through the same sorority, so when she reached out about planning a destination wedding, I was incredibly honored.
One of the things that made their wedding unique was that they ultimately selected their resort without ever visiting it beforehand. While that can feel intimidating for many couples, by that point I had personally visited El Dorado Royale and El Dorado Casitas more than eight times, allowing me to confidently recommend the resort based on firsthand experience rather than brochures or marketing photos.
After discussing their priorities, guest experience goals, and overall wedding vision, I helped narrow their search down to three resort options. Ultimately, they chose El Dorado Royale and El Dorado Casitas for their destination wedding, trusting that the resort would deliver the experience they were hoping for.
Because I already had an established relationship with the resort, I was also able to assist with contract negotiations and help secure a few additional perks for their 75-guest wedding group. When you’re planning a destination wedding from another country, having someone familiar with both the property and the process can make a big difference.

One of the biggest decisions couples make when planning a destination wedding is choosing a resort that will work well for both them and their guests.
For Marissa and Joe, El Dorado Royale and El Dorado Casitas checked a lot of boxes.
One of their top priorities was finding a resort that was relatively close to the Cancun airport. With 75 guests traveling to Mexico, they wanted to minimize transportation time after arrival and make the travel experience as easy as possible for their friends and family. Located approximately 30 minutes from the airport, El Dorado Royale and El Dorado Casitas offered the convenience they were looking for while still providing the tropical Riviera Maya experience they envisioned.
Like many couples, they also wanted an adults-only atmosphere for most of their wedding guests while still being able to include a small number of young children in their celebration. The unique setup of the El Dorado resort complex made that possible.
While most guests stayed at El Dorado Royale or El Dorado Casitas, wedding events could take place throughout the neighboring resort complex, creating flexibility that many adults-only resorts simply don’t offer. In fact, we were even able to arrange for one young guest to attend the ceremony venue at El Dorado Royale. They were escorted to the venue for the ceremony and then returned to Generations afterward, allowing the couple to include an important family member while still working within the resort’s policies.
Some guests opted for El Dorado Royale, which provides a more budget-friendly adults-only experience, while others upgraded to El Dorado Casitas for additional privacy, upgraded amenities, rooms with an outdoor shower, and a more luxurious feel.
For a large destination wedding group, that flexibility can make a huge difference. It allows guests to make the best decision for their own vacation while still being part of the same wedding celebration.
Combined with beautiful venues, lush tropical grounds, and the convenience of having multiple neighboring resorts working together, El Dorado Royale and El Dorado Casitas ended up being the perfect fit for Marissa and Joe’s wedding vision. The resort complex also offered a variety of room categories and price points, which was especially important for a wedding group of 75 guests. Rather than forcing everyone into the same experience, guests could choose accommodations that fit their personal travel style and budget.
Marissa and Joe exchanged vows at Fuentes Beach, one of the beautiful ceremony locations available within the El Dorado resort complex.
Following the ceremony, guests celebrated at the Sky Deck at Generations Riviera Maya. This rooftop venue offers stunning views and creates an unforgettable atmosphere for destination wedding receptions.
Of course, weddings don’t always go exactly according to plan.
Just as dinner was getting underway, rain made an appearance and gave guests a surprise they weren’t expecting. Thankfully, everyone embraced the moment and continued celebrating.
In fact, the unexpected rain has become one of the memories that makes their wedding day even more memorable. Sometimes the moments you never planned for become the stories everyone talks about later.
One of the most impressive parts of Marissa and Joe’s wedding story actually happened before guests ever arrived in Mexico.
The major travel days leading up to their wedding were impacted by a freak ice storm in Dallas, causing flight delays, cancellations, and rerouted itineraries for many of their guests.
Rather than letting those challenges create unnecessary stress, adjustments were made behind the scenes to help guests arrive safely and with updated transportation arrangements waiting for them.
One guest, Marissa’s sister, didn’t arrive until 2 a.m. on the wedding day itself.
Despite all of the travel disruptions, guests still made it to Riviera Maya, the wedding moved forward beautifully, and Marissa and Joe were able to focus on enjoying their celebration rather than worrying about logistics.
It’s a perfect example of why having an experienced destination wedding planner can make such a difference when unexpected situations arise.
When Marissa and Joe first started exploring destination weddings, one of their biggest concerns was planning such an important event from another country.
Marissa shared: “When we were first debating on having a destination wedding, I was pretty nervous about planning a wedding from a completely different country, but with Morgan’s previous experience and expertise, I knew we would be in good hands.”
Because they were selecting a resort site unseen, having firsthand guidance throughout the process was especially important.
“We ended up selecting El Dorado Royale & Casitas in Riviera Maya, Mexico, and while making this big decision completely site unseen was very nerve-racking, we put our trust in Morgan who had been to this resort 8+ times and already vetted it for us, so I knew it was a good choice.”
In addition to helping narrow down the best resort options, I also assisted with contract negotiations and worked directly with the resort throughout the planning process. Thanks to my existing relationship with the property, I was even able to secure a few extra perks for their wedding group.
Throughout the planning process, we worked together on everything from room block reservations and guest travel arrangements to venue selections, food and beverage choices, floral design, décor, and wedding day logistics.
One part of Marissa’s review that meant a lot to me was hearing how supported they felt throughout the wedding planning process, especially during the resort’s busiest seasons.
“Sometimes the resort staff were slow to respond when they were in busy season, but Morgan was very quick to respond to all of our many questions and could often provide her personal experience from weddings at this property.”
As their wedding week approached, an unexpected challenge put those planning skills to the test.
A freak ice storm in Dallas created flight cancellations and rerouted itineraries for many of their guests.
Marissa shared: “Morgan was working around the clock to make sure that everyone was attended to and that their transportation arrangements were adjusted accordingly, including my sister who finally arrived at the resort at 2am on wedding day. All of this was happening behind the scenes so that we could enjoy our time in paradise and didn’t have to stress about our guests getting there.”
One of my goals with every destination wedding is to allow couples to focus on celebrating while I handle the logistics behind the scenes. Hearing that their guests also appreciated the communication and organization made this review even more meaningful.
“We received so many compliments from our friends and family praising her thoroughness and attentiveness. The travel documents provided to all of our guests included everything you could possibly think of and definitely helped field questions. Morgan actually encouraged us to direct everyone her way.”
Marissa ended her review with the highest compliment I could ask for: “Overall, we had an amazing week and wedding celebration in Mexico and we owe it all to Morgan.”

Every destination wedding is different, but Marissa and Joe’s celebration reinforced a few things I see time and time again.
First, you don’t necessarily need to visit a resort in person before making a decision if you’re working with someone who has firsthand experience and can guide you toward the right fit.
Second, destination weddings rarely go exactly according to plan. Flights get delayed, weather changes unexpectedly, and surprises happen.
Most importantly, those unexpected moments rarely define the experience.
What couples remember most are the people who traveled to celebrate with them, the memories they created together, and the joy of finally getting married in a place they’ve dreamed about.
No two destination weddings are exactly alike, even when they take place at the same resort.
If you’re considering El Dorado Royale, El Dorado Casitas, or Generations Riviera Maya for your wedding, be sure to check out these other real celebrations for additional venue ideas, guest experience inspiration, and planning insights:
Each couple brought their own vision to life, which is one of my favorite things about planning destination weddings at this resort complex.
Marissa and Joe’s wedding is a great reminder that destination wedding planning doesn’t have to be overwhelming.
They selected their resort without ever visiting it in person, navigated travel disruptions that were completely outside of their control, and still ended up with an incredible week surrounded by 75 of their favorite people in Riviera Maya.
A lot can happen between the day you book your wedding and the day you say “I do.” Resort options, contracts, room blocks, guest travel, weather, and countless other details all play a role in the experience.
Having someone who can help you navigate those decisions, answer questions, and troubleshoot unexpected challenges can make all the difference.
If you’re considering a destination wedding in Mexico or the Caribbean and aren’t sure where to begin, I’d love to help you create a plan that feels exciting instead of overwhelming.
